Get your website ready for the Christmas rush

A practical checklist to make sure a broken checkout or a slow site doesn't cost you sales at your busiest time.

All insights

For a lot of small businesses, the weeks around Christmas make or break the year. And yet the festive rush is exactly when digital problems are most expensive — a checkout that fails or a site that crawls at your busiest moment costs real sales. A little preparation now saves a lot of panic later. Here’s a practical checklist.

Test the whole buying journey

Before the rush, go through your own website as a customer would. Add something to the basket, go all the way to payment, and actually complete a purchase. It is astonishing how often a shop discovers its checkout has quietly broken only when a customer emails to complain. Test it on your phone too — that’s where most people will be shopping.

Make sure it can take the traffic

A site that’s comfortable with ten visitors can buckle under two hundred. If you’re expecting a spike — a promotion, a busy period, a mention somewhere — it’s worth checking your hosting can cope and your pages load quickly. Slow pages lose sales in normal times; at Christmas they lose more.

Get the practical details right

  • Publish your last order dates for delivery clearly and early.
  • Update your opening hours everywhere — your site and your Google Business Profile.
  • Make sure stock levels are accurate so you’re not selling what you can’t ship.
  • Check your confirmation emails are actually sending.

Have a plan for when something breaks

Even with good preparation, things go wrong at the worst moment. The businesses that cope are the ones who know who to call. Line that up before December, not during it. If you’d like a second pair of eyes over your setup before the rush, that’s a sensible bit of insurance.
